As Winds of Change Sweep Schools, Facing History Nurtures Teachers’ Values, Remarks by Sanda Balaban, new member of the Facing History Board of Trustees, April 11, 2011

Though the world is changing at a rapid pace, too often schools are not. Many beleaguered teachers, struggling under the weight of ever increasing demands and dictates and ever narrowing accountability measures, bunker down and try to avoid the distractions of the world beyond their doors.
Yet the world IS our classroom, and we must increasingly equip teachers and students to be able to make sense of things in live time and to be empowered agents and upstanders within it. Knowledge is not static—if you taught a unit about Libya last semester, you’d need to be teaching a very different unit today, and you couldn’t teach out of a traditional textbook.
