‘Sacred stories’ based on pride, pain, injustice & humiliation form identity
Have to recognize those of those who oppose (have opposed) you
Example: statue of those who died as Confederate soldiers
Truth – we have all been victims
History is a container for grievance – victims become victimizers
The difficulty of this work is navigating multiple and competing truths at the same time – and holding unto them.
Trauma – can get stuck going back in and over again and again, without healing
Check: are we fighting the right fight? (Who are your opponents?)
How do we talk/deal with those who threaten our sense of security?
Inviting everyone [even those you vehemently disagree with] to the table: moving from information [which can simply harden stances, heighten emotions] to transformation
